William Shield Festival 2023

October and November 2023 sees the return of the William Shield Festival, a celebration of the life of Swalwell's own 18th Century composer.

The highlight of the festival will be two performances of William Shield's 1791 musical comedy The Woodman. Originally showcased in Covent Garden, this topsy turvey hilarious tale of love, archery and healthy competition, performed by Rocket Opera with the William Shield Festival Orchestra, will take place on Friday 17th November at Jesmond United Reformed Church, Burdon Terrace, Jesmond NE2 3EA, and on Saturday 18th November 2023 at Swalwell Community Centre, Clavering Road, Swalwell NE16 3EX at 7.00pm. Admission £10 (£5 over 60’s, under 21’s free).

Vibrant, melodious and side-splittingly funny, this comic opera is filled with easy listening music

suitable for all. From solos and duets to the popular ‘glees’ (chorus numbers), it has something for

everyone – including an archery competition and various amorous exploits at the centre of its story

You don’t want to miss this!

Tickets from Eventbrite or on the door. For more information about The Woodman and the rest of the festival programme, see our Facebook page. You can also check out our new video
